International Space Apps Challenge weekend

Monday, March 26th, 2012

garagegeeksspaceappchallange.jpg

The GarageGeeks, SpaceIL and NASA invites you to International Space Apps Challenge.

The International Space Apps Challenge is a 2 day technology development event during which citizens from around the world will work together to solve current challenges relevant to both space exploration and social need. The International Space Apps Challenge will take place on all seven continents – in space -  and at GarageGeeks HQ - on 20-21 April 2012.

The International Space Apps Challenge is a “codeathon-style” event. A codeathon is a unique event that brings together citizens interested in collaborating on the development solutions that address critical challenges. A codeathon celebrates software development in its most positive context—using minimal resources and maximum brainpower to create outside- the-box solutions in response to interesting problems. Codeathons are technology development marathons, drawing on the talents and initiative of the best and the brightest software developers, engineers, designers and technologists from around the world, who volunteer their time to respond to real- world problems with solutions than can have immediate impact.

At the events, individuals collaborate with others by forming teams focused on solving a particular challenge. The teams compete with other teams around the world to utilize publicly available space and data to design innovative “solutions” to a pre-determined series of global “challenges.”

The hackathon starts at 17,18 November at GarageGeeks, and a week later you need to submit your project.

if you are into it, read more below.

=======================
About Natural Interaction ® Hackathon
=======================
Game developers, traditional developers, graphic designers, creative’s are invited to create and submit cool “Natural Interaction ® application”.
PrimeSense will lend sensors for each group during up to 1 week.
Jury will be composed by 3 experts who will designate a winning project.

Designing or porting games to become motion controlled is not reserved to an elite few.
Using the OpenNI Framework with OpenNI compatible Middleware and depth sensors, developers can easily integrate full-body control and interactive augmented reality into their games.
Designers are just starting to explore possible game mechanics and gameplays enabled by gesture-based technologies.
This Hackathon will demonstrate how easy this process is, using tools and environments that are familiar to many game developers such as Unity3D.
It’s as simple as developing a keyboard-based application!

=======================
Contest Condition:
=======================
* All OpenNI compliant projects will be eligible to the competition (As per the OpenNI Guidelines PDF doc)
* Participants will have 1 week to submit their project.
* Upload your project to OpenNI Arena before deadline (With Source Code to share with the community)
* Project shouldn’t require any additional purchase (software/hardware)

=======================
References

Everything is available and downloadable for free from http://www.openni.org
* NI Apps guidelines
* Documentations
* OpenNI: SDK Binaries, Samples & Source code
* NiTE: Middleware Binaries and Samples
* Unity3D Wrapper (Latest version of the wrapper was released in the latest “Unstable Version” package)

Got an idea for a new hack? Looking for help writing a new fuzzer? Need help with your reverse shell over ICMP?
Create account at http://www.dc9723.org/Hackathon and add your project, or alternatively join someone else’s project.

The DC9723 Hackathon event is open to the public, yet it is customary to participate in at least one project (or to create your own, either way it’s hands-on).

GarageGeeks Musical hardware workshop

Monday, July 27th, 2009

ggmusichardware.jpg

September 3rd

19:00, garagegeeks HQ, hapeled 40, Holon

In this workshop people would make hardware that play music, and then we’ll connect all of them together and play some a nice class symphony ( and more songs) with a lot of instruments

instrument examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsQd2n99zS4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ht96HJ01SE4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4SCSGRVAQE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1tatiU2ha0

Starting points:

What you’ll need for the workshop:

Some Mechanical hardware to musically control, and that can produce sounds in different tones. Hard drives, floppy drives, printers, A motor, power tools. Be creative.

A method to control them from a computer. You can use these kinds of hardware interface boards for example:

A laptop with some softwares: to connect to the garage’s midi network we’ll use: http://www.ebertronic.com/downloadMidiViaNet.htm or if you have Midi hardware, bring it so we won’t need to count on the network.

MIDI interface softwares:

http://www.midiox.com/

we want to make this a two part session, the first people meet, start working, build the instrument, and then go home, finish their instrument, and meet again for the symphony playing.

The first one on September 3rd. this will give you time to find hardware, buy Arduino or Phidget boards etc.. We’ll set the date for the next one soon.

How do we decided what we’ll play with the orchestra ?

If anyone here knows PHP, we want to ask you to help us build a system where people can uplaod .midi files and then vote for their favorite file, then we’ll arrange the most chosen songs to be played.
